Trade Deadline 2013-2014
The 2013-2014 trade deadline has just recently passed and wow! What a deadline it was. First off I would like to give my opinion that it is quality over quantity. There were 20 trades in total , the
lowest it has been in years. But the trades involved this year were superior to other years. I am now going to compare what I think was that 5 biggest trades of the deadline.
5:Halak Didn't Even Unpack
TRADE: Washington trades goalie Michal Neuvrith and defenceman Rostislav Klesla to the Buffalo Sabres in return for goalie Jaroslav Halak and a 3rd round pick.
RECAP: I knew Halak wasn't going to stay in Buffalo, he is to good of a goalie to be on a full stage rebuilding team. Buffalo is doing a good job of rebuilding as they have many early draft picks and they receive a better than average young goalie in Neuvrith.I am also very impressed in Washington for picking up a good goalie in Halak, I think that will work will with Holtby as a backup.
WINNER: Plain and simple, Halak is better than Nuevrith but only time will tell. But speaking in terms of this season, I would have to give this one to Washington.
4: The Return To Florida
TRADE: Vancouver trades goalie Roberto Luongo and Forward Steven Anthony to the Florida Panthers for goalie Jacob Markstrom and Forward Shawn Matthias .
RECAP: This trade was foreseen by myself for a while. Simple, Luongo wanted out of Vancouver as quick as possible because of how poorly he was treated there. He would elect to go back to Florida out of any team he had admitted at the post trade press conference.. Vancouver gets Markstrom, a mediocre goalie at best that is in and out of the AHL and Matthias, A small cap hit that has potential to be a 20 goal/season player. Florida receives the elite goaltending duties of Luongo who has a few good years left and a prospect who has spent his career is the ECHL and AHL.
WINNER: Obviously Florida gets the better end of this deal receiving a top notch goalie in Roberto Luongo and with this trade Vancouver completely leaves their goalie situation wide open and declares a state of emergency and a start of a rebuild.
3: Oh Marian!
TRADE: LA trades Forward Matt Frattin , 2nd round pick (2014) and a coonditional 3rd riund pick (14-15) to the Columbus Bluejackets for Forward Marian Gaborik.
RECAP: LA is looking to push for another big cup run and what not a better way then to add 30 goal/season player (When not injured) in Marian Gaborik. What a great player, one of my personal favourites ( That isn't a leaf). Now don't forget about Columbus now. They do get alot of relief in the salary department , they pick up a great young player in Matt Frattin and they pick up a couple of early draft picks.
WINNER: This is one of those, “ time will tell” trades. Obvsiously LA gets the better end of this deal but you never know, Those draft picks could both be 20 goal/season players and Matt Frattin could score 50 some day! Alright maybe im joking about frattin but still, all in all a good trade.
2:Know Any French?
TRADE: Montreal trades Forword Sebastian Collberg and a conditonal 2nd round pick (2014) to the NY Islanders for Forward Thomas Vanek and condtional 5th round pick (2014)
RECAP: Let's face it, no one want's to play for the Islanders. It is overall a terrible organization that has been destroyed over the years and this trade topps it all off.. Of couarse Vanek wanted out and also his contract was up and we all know he wouldn't resign there so the next step was to find where to? Many people included myself was under the influence that he was going to a contender. How Montreal pulled this off I'll never know, Even though I hate Montreal I have to tip my hat to them.So all in all the Islanders GM has to be close friends with Rob ford ( I'm sorry if you don't get the reference) and Montreal gets a fantastic player in Vanek.
WINNER: its gotta be NY islanders, vanek for collberg !!! Wow Islander fans must be excited about this one!!!!
1: I'll Show You Yzerman
TRADE: Lightning trade forward Ryan Callahan , Conditonal 2nd (2014) and 1st round pick (2015) to the NY Rangers for forward Martin St. Louis ( Captain Sassy Pants)
RECAP: This is going to have reports, alalytists and fans going knuts everywhere. We all knew that Marty wanted out..... but why? It couldn't just be because of him not being on the Canadian roster? This one has me asking questions, there has to be more to it he left an overall pretty good team . Or is it because he wants to reunite with Richards again? I can not give you my personal opinon here , all i can say is I hope the best for the guy , a true Canadian leader and one of my favourite palyers. Both teams benefit from this trade with Tampa getting two early draft picks and overall good palyer and natural leader in Callahan.
WINNER: This one is close and opinons are goingto differ depending on who you ask.. In my eyes I beleive that the New York Rangers obtaiend a player that may help them get that push that they needed. But don't get me wrong this trade was good for both teams.
All in all I can say that this was a great trade deadline for the teams and for the fanfs, i'm very excited to see how these trades pan out in the future .
